Fun Chinese Poetry Writing Activities for Kids: Easy Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Poetry writing in a Chinese immersion classroom can feel a little intimidating at first… especially for young learners who are still building their vocabulary and putting together full sentences in Chinese. BUT the good news is: poetry doesn’t have to be complicated!
In this blog, I’ll be sharing some fun and beginner-friendly poetry activities that helped my first grade students confidently write their own poems in Chinese and enjoy the process!
1. Introduce What Poetry Can Look Like in Chinese
Before we jumped into writing, we spent time exploring what poetry can look like in Chinese. My students learned that poems don’t always have to rhyme or follow strict, complicated rules.
This was a big “aha!” moment for many of them! They were surprised to discover that poems can be simple and still beautiful. They can express feelings, observations, imagination, or even sensory details from everyday life.
2. Explore Beginner-Friendly Poem Types in Chinese
After learning that poetry can be flexible and creative, we started with a few simple poem structures that gave students just enough support while still leaving room for creativity. These formats helped my students organize their ideas, experiment with Chinese vocabulary, and feel successful as young writers.
Here are the four types of poems we introduced:
五感诗 (Five Senses Poems)
Students used their five senses, what they see, hear, smell, taste, and feel, to describe a topic. This type of poem encouraged children to think deeply about sensory details and use descriptive vocabulary in Chinese.
拟人诗 (Personification Poems)
Students gave human characteristics to objects or nature. This was a fun way to encourage imagination and creative thinking while practicing Chinese sentence writing.
藏头诗 (Acrostic Poems)
Students wrote a word vertically and used each character as the beginning of a sentence or phrase. This structure provided strong support for beginner Chinese writers because it gave them a clear starting point for every line.
颜色诗 (Color Poems)
Students focused on one theme and brainstormed colorful objects, feelings, and ideas connected to it. This type of poem encouraged students to notice the world around them while helping them make personal connections through their writing.
Students also loved using our Chinese picture dictionary to look up new vocabulary ideas and find words to use in their poems. It gave them extra support when they got stuck and helped them feel more confident and independent as writers.

3. Turn Student Poems into a Classroom Display
The final step was always the most exciting, seeing their poems displayed in the classroom!
Students chose the favorite version of their poem, carefully cut out the template, and glued it onto colorful paper to make it stand out. This simple step made their work feel extra special and “published,” like real poets.
During our Open School Night, students proudly pointed out their poems to their parents, sharing what they wrote and explaining their ideas in Chinese. It was such a special moment to see their confidence shine as they took ownership of their learning and celebrated their work with their families.
With the right structures and a little encouragement, young Mandarin learners can express themselves creatively and build real confidence in their Chinese writing skills.
