Kids Learning Chinese: Leveled Passages for Chinese Reading and Comprehension

When it comes to reading, there is no one-fit-all solution. Learning Chinese is not an exception, and that’s why we decided to create these leveled reading passages to provide effective and engaging ways to improve our students’ Chinese literacy through guided reading.

Watching students learn how to read is amazing, but helping them improve is even better. To achieve this goal, I focus on the areas that my students find challenging and create exercises and activities that are relevant to their interests and learning styles.

These reading passages are perfect tools for building Chinese character recognition, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency.

Why Use Leveled Passages for Chinese Reading?

Here are the top 5 reasons:

  1. They give your students exposure to a variety of genres: fairy tales, fables, realistic fiction, and non-fiction.

  2. The passages cover highly interesting topics across various subjects, including science, social studies, social-emotional learning, and more.

  3. Students will learn Chinese characters in context, which will reinforce their memory of the usage of Chinese words and strengthen their comprehension skills.

  4. These passages can be used with Chinese learners at different levels.

  5. The reading comprehension questions help connect the four modalities and enable students to develop their Chinese literacy skills. The formats of the questions are varied: vocabulary practice, multiple-choice, writing response, matching activities, and more.

This student is using her finger to track each character as she reads.

She is reading a Level 4 Passage about a family’s visit to the farm.

This student is reading a Level 5 story about a girl learning to dance.

After reading the story, she copied the new vocabulary and drew the definition of each word. Then, she answered a text-based question and wrote about her dream by making a text-to-self connection.

How to Use Leveled Passages in Your Classroom or at Home?

Each packet comes with an instruction guide.

Inside the guide, you can find a list of characteristics of readers at each level and what you can do to best assist them at their levels.

We recommend that you conduct an informal assessment with your Chinese learners, so you can determine which level you should start with. Remember each passage can be used more than once. I always tell my students that good readers never say they’re done reading a book but can learn new things every time they reread it!
